Admired but Not Desired

Mark 10:17-23

17  And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

18  And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

19  Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.

20  And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.

21  Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

22  And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

23  And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

Introduction:

There are people that I admire, but that I have no desire to be like them.  People that work on skyscrapers for instance.

I read a passage this week that troubles me. It always has.

Matthew 7:21-22

21  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

This passage comes at the end of passage where Jesus has just told them that “you shall know them by their fruits.”  The good tree produces good fruit and a bad tree produces bad fruit.

It troubles me because I see people “Thanking God” but they have no evidence of God in their lives.  This passage is a sobering reminder that it is not what we say with our lips but what we do with our lives that makes the difference.

The Young man from the passage.

·        He was an admirer of Jesus, He called Him Good Master

·        He declared that he had kept the commandment that Jesus listed off to him since his youth up (notice Jesus didn’t dispute that claim either.)

·        He was very wealthy, and there in lies the problem.

We all want to be followers of Christ.  We admire Him tremendously.  But there is one thing that we can never forget.

It is found in Phillipians 2.

Phillipians 2:5-11

5  Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

6  Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

7  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

8  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

9  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The part that is crucial is this, “We cannot be like him and hold onto everything that is near and dear to us.”

He left thrones and principalities and power.  He left behind reputation and strength.  He left behind immortality.  And the first step in following Him is not to a throne, but from it.

Luke 9:57-62

57  And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

58  And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

59  And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

60  Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.

61  And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.

62  And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

That is why we come across passages like Mark 8.

Mark 8:34-38

34  And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

35  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.

36  For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

37  Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

38  Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

·        Whosoever – Not everybody will

·        Deny Himself – Let him reject the things that he has wanted.

·        His Cross – It belongs specifically to Him.  It is not shaped like anybody else’s cros.

·        Follow – To go after.  Notice, he doesn’t give the destination.

But notice what Paul says that if I’m going to know Him in the power of his resurrection, I must reach unto the fellowship of his sufferings.

Phillipians 3:7-11

7  But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.

8  Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

9  And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

10  That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

11  If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

We must be willing to partake of his nature.  That is the final statement of John 6.

John 6:48-60

48  I am that bread of life.

49  Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.

50  This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

51  I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

52  The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

53  Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

54  Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

55  For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

56  He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

57  As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.

58  This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

59  These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

60  Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
